A New York State of Mind
After a couple days in Cape May, we headed up the coast to visit my husband's aunt and uncle in northern New Jersey. NYC was only a half hour away and beckoned to us across the water. We resisted her Siren call and settled for a morning touring Ellis Island and Liberty Island. Seeing the Statue of Liberty up close and personal was an incredible experience!
For our craft, I asked E to paint a sunset picture for me, then I handed her a cut-out coloring book page of Lady Liberty to paint into a silhouette. We pasted it onto the picture to finish our paper-memory of such a great day!
Although we stayed on the NJ side, my hubby couldn't resist getting lots of pictures of the skyline. Which leads me to our book...
New York State Of Mind by Billy Joel
Taking the famous lyrics, illustrator Izak Zenou matches Billy Joel's words with his own beautiful paintings depicting the familiar scenes of NYC. This is a great book for anyone planning on taking their kids into the city.
Obviously, a Statue of Liberty book would have been more appropriate, but I couldn't find one at the library. Any suggestions???

I can't wait to take my girls to NYC! I didn't even know about that book. Thanks for the suggestion, as always. I LOVE the art too. Just gorgeous.

ReplyDeleteThe artwork is just gorgeous--you should frame it!
ReplyDeleteSaw your tree faces on the Crafty Crow yesterday! Nice work. :)
That is very nice artwork! Our library doesn't have any Lady Liberty books, either, but I noticed quite a few, for children, at Amazon.
ReplyDeleteNOw that song is stuck in my head and I only know one line of it..... Love the project.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a creation to keep - it's a lovely picture. And I'm sure there must be some stories about immigrants arriving at ellis island - I'm not from the US, but that's where I'd start.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great project :)
ReplyDeleteHow lovely! And how nice that you can "ask for a sunset" and get one!! Can't wait for Red TEd to do that!!
ReplyDeleteI do believe this could be hung in a New York Art Museum...
ReplyDeleteMy daughter Lily loved the picture your daughter painted! I think we have been inspired.
ReplyDeleteI have a book titled Liberty by Lynn Curlee. It's a beautiful picture book all about the Statue of Liberty, but it's really long. I think it may be better suited for older kids, but the illustrations are wonderful!
What a beautiful project! Ironically, we just returned from Northern NJ as well, and we also had a short visit to NYC - to the Museum of Natural History. I like the book that you selected. Last year we read an early reader "Arthur in New York" by Marc Brown which introduced some of NYC highlights (including Statue of Liberty) to Anna.
ReplyDeleteThat picture is a framer! I found the book The Statue of Liberty by Lucille Recht Penner in the Scholastic Book Clubs magazine. It has big print, 2-3 sentences a page and tells how she was made and why.
ReplyDeleteSunset pictures are the best!
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed reading all the comments with the book suggestions. I don't think we've ever discussed NY yet with the kids.
The sunset picture looks wonderful. The book looks like it would be fun to read too.
ReplyDeleteI thought her picture was an illustration from the book you read until I started reading your post. She did a fabulous job.
ReplyDeleteHer artwork turned out beautiful. I love NYC. So very much. My oldest son has been a couple of times with us, but I can't wait to take all 3 of them. It will be fun to read some of these NYC books before we go.
ReplyDeleteI lived in Norther NJ for about 15 years. I miss a lot of things about that area and especially enjoyed your Jersey shore pictures. I love the Statue of Liberty. Your project is awesome!
ReplyDeleteGreat project! I love that song too!
ReplyDeleteWe enjoyed reading This is New York by M. Sasek when we went to NYC last summer.
Great sunset painting!
ReplyDeleteI would love to visit NY on day!
I love your project!! We were in NYC a few weeks ago to, My New York. Thank you for linking up to stART :0)
