Sister Story

My niece turned 10 last month! I was browsing the book store aisles trying to find something appropriate when I came across The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy by Jeanne Birdsall. I read this novel a couple years ago and loved it. As the title says, it's the story of four sisters, the daughters of a kindly widower, and their adventures while on summer vacation in the Berkshire Mountains. My niece is the second of four children and I hoped she would enjoy getting to know each of the sisters - aged 12, 11, 10, and 4 - as much as I did.

If you grew up enjoying Little Women, Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, or The Boxcar Children, then I know you will love this new generation of sibling-stories! Treat yourself to a fun summer read and then save it on a bookshelf for when your little ones are old enough to enjoy it as well.

Kate Greenaway Medal Shortlist Books

The Kate Greenaway Medal is the UK's version of our Caldecott Award and "is awarded annually for an outstanding book in terms of illustration for children and young people." When I heard the shortlist announced, I visited my virtual local library to place a hold on any copies they might have. Only two were available: The Way Back Home by Oliver Jeffers and Harris Finds His Feet by Catherine Rayner.

Both of these books boast fabulous illustrations. The Way Back Home features simple stick figures, but the artist does an amazing job at imbuing those little figures with a wide range of emotion. The illustrations, along with the story, are fanciful and fun. The story follows a little boy who takes his airplane up to the moon and there runs out of gas. He is frightened until he meets a little martian who is also stuck on the moon. Together they figure out a way to both get home.

I have to admit, Little Page was fairly disinterested in the book. I'm not sure if the subtle humor in the story was over her head or if she's just too girly to care about a little boy's space adventures. Regardless, it's not going to top her list of favorite books.

The second book was more of a success. Harris Finds His Feet has precious illustrations of a baby hare and his granddad. I'm not sure how the artist managed to capture the softness of the baby hare's fur, the energy of a rabbit in a full run, or even the feel of the breeze across a meadow. The story is about Harris, a young hare, and his Granddad who teaches him about the world. At one point I was honestly scared that the Granddad would be eaten by a wolf. He's not, but the book does communicate that his time is almost up and it is Harris' turn to explore the world. It's a simple story, but a sweet one about the love between generations. With father's day coming up, it might be a nice one to check out and remind your little one of the granddads in his life!

Prayer for a Child (or baby!)

Here is another of my favorite board books: Prayer for a Child by Rachel Field. This classic Caldecott Award winner is a beautifully illustrated nighttime prayer. I teared up the first time I read it to Little Page. Holding her in my lap, her freshly-washed little head resting against my chest, I read this prayer out loud and felt incredibly blessed by the experience. The poem is quaint but beautiful, asking blessing on those quiet aspects of a child's life: her milk, toys, friends, family. The illustrations of a little blond child in her victorianesque life are sweet and compliment the lines of the poem perfectly.

I think this book works as a board book because each page contains only a line or two of text. I don't know about your baby, but Littlest Page has the attention span of, well, a 10-month-old. She also loves turning pages, so the less text on a page, the better. This book is just the right length. The pictures are colorful and simple enough to hold a baby's attention. Littlest P likes to give one picture in particular big, sloppy kisses. I couldn't ask for a better endorsement!
