I Ain't Gonna Paint No More!

We're going through the painful process of getting our house ready to go on the market. This has involved a myriad of projects, including painting nearly half the rooms in the house. I'm finally down to the last room, and I can't wait to cry, "I ain't gonna paint no more, no more!"

The girls, of course, have been begging me to let them help, so I pulled out some finger paints for A this afternoon. To jazz up the project a bit, I taped down the cardstock with painters tape - which was all too handy - and added an A in the middle.

A's been refusing to participate in the crafts at school - I know, can you believe it? - so I encouraged finger-painting, just to make sure it wasn't the messiness that's been turning her off. Nope. No problems there.

When the picture had dried, we carefully pulled off the tape and hung the artwork in a place of honor!

I Ain't Gonna Paint No More! by Karen Beaumont

I Ain't Gonna Paint No More! (Ala Notable Children's Books. Younger Readers (Awards))In this charming story set to verse, a mother puts away the paints after discovering her son painted the carpets, floor, ceilings, and walls. The freshly-bathed boy vows he "ain't gonna paint no more!" but retrieves his paints and declares, "So I take some red/and I paint my…/HEAD!" He continues painting various parts of his body, each part hinted in the rhyme and cleverly revealed on the following page. Covered in paint by the end of the story, our little protagonist is caught in the act and ends up back in the bathtub.

A loves this book! She has me read it to her often and loves repeating the stanza, "I ain't gonna paint no more, no more! I ain't gonna paint no more!" She drew all over my friend's walls and table today, so I'm not sure the message is sinking in.

  2. Oh, painting an entire house STINKS! (Been there, hope to NOT do it again for a long while!)

Perhaps A could assist you with her fingers on the last room- I bet it would only increase the value of your house! :0)

  4. Getting a house ready to sell is a major pain. Good luck.

We like that book too. A's art is beautiful. I'm surprised she doesn't want to participate in arts and crafts at school - maybe she thinks of it as something she does with you. Who knows?

Oh no about your friend's walls and table!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope it washed off okay!

  5. I've been lucky none of mine have tried it at other people's houses yet.....

Maybe it's not being able to control how it's done at school?

  8. Good luck with getting your home ready!

The book you chose this week is perfect for your current state of affairs:-). I've never heard of it, but will definitely look for it. Fingerpainting is a big hit here with my 2 year old.

I love your finished project too!

  10. It sounds like a great book that I dare not show my crew...they don't need any ideas! A's art turned out great. I love how her colors blend so nice.

    Good luck with your house!

  12. I am not sure JDaniel would get the message either. It is totally worth reading the book to find out.

    I love your project.

  13. I'll have to see if I can find the book. Little brother is very into drawing on our walls and it's SO FRUSTRATING! I don't know if this would encourage him to keep going...or stop...but it would be a fun book to read either way.

I love using painters tape for the borders, but hadn't thought of using it in the middle. I will definitely try something like that because one thing my two little ones excel at is covering paper with paint!

  17. Love it! And have I mentioned before that you have lots of local friends to help you paint? Pretty sure I've mentioned it. :) I can't believe that A isn't participating in crafts. :( Maybe she thinks that is your thing and doesn't want to spoil it? I don't know, kids are weird sometimes. :)

  18. I saw your post this morning on www.oneprettything.com and loved the idea! I decided to make today "Art Thursday" (not knowing if we will continue this EVERY Thursday, but it is always better to be glass-half-full right?!) Please follow the link to my blog where I posted my own daughter's project! (She loves the painting, only two years old, but already doesn't like the mess of things!)
