I'm convinced that with enough creativity you can make pretty much anything out of a handprint. Getting your 21 month old to let you paint her hand is a different challenge. After some coaxing, A provided me with a gorgeous handprint to match my own. I added beaks and feet to create this mama and baby duck painting and then E colored the background.
Isn't this the cutest handprint ever? I'm a little alarmed at how large it is! My baby just keeps growing up.
The painting was inspired by a book, of course...
Come Along, Daisy!

This is one of those books I've seen around for years but only recently picked up. What took me so long? The illustrations are gorgeous and Daisy just might be the cutest duck ever drawn. (Sorry, Make Way for Ducklings.) The story is not an original one: Daisy, distracted by all the curious things in her world, ignores her mother and gets lost. After a couple scares she finds her mother and never again wanders off. Blueberries for Sal
and Baby Bear Discovers the World are two other (superior) books I can think of that follow a similar storyline.It's the illustrations that make this book special. Gorgeous watercolors create a lush world of greens and blues that contrast beautifully with Daisy's red and orange form. Just take a look:
I seriously want to tear some of these pages out of the book and frame them on our playroom wall! Don't worry. I'll resist the impulse. What book's illustrations bring out this same desire in you?

You often see handprints used in kids' art and I don't think it really works, but in this case I think the pictures are so effective! And they really match the originals well - a great stART project! I've always loved Kay Nielsen illustrations - i'd love to have one of them on my wall!

ReplyDeleteLooks like a great book. I am amazed at what a great handprint you got from your little one. My Little girl is 22 months and it is hard to get her to spread her fingers to get something that looks like an actual handprint.

ReplyDeleteI agree on the Daisy illustrations. We read one of the books in the series recently, and fell in love with Daisy - who is hands down, the cutest duck ever drawn!
