Achooo! - A Bunny for the Bad Times

This week's theme turned out to be unfortunately very appropriate. I spent most of Tuesday night on the floor of the bathroom, most of Wednesday in bed recovering, and then up most of last night with a sick baby. I think we've contracted every virus going around except for the swine flu. But hey, the day is still young.

The Book - The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams

I love this classic. I don't remember when I first read it, but there's a reason it has endured for nearly 90 years. I chose this book as a "sick book" not only because the little boy in the story comes down with scarlet fever, but because I think your best chance of reading it to your child is when they are listless with fever. Let's face it, it was written over 80 years ago, and won't typically appeal to modern, fidgety kids. Yet every child deserves to be exposed to this story at a young age, so try it out when your little one is sick and sleepy and simply wants to listen to your soothing voice.

BTW - You don't even need to buy the book; you can read a full-text version online.

The Craft - MYO Boo-Boo Bunny

Boo-Boo Bunnies are cute little wash clothes designed to hold an ice cube that's not only perfect for placing on boo-boos but also great to wipe on feverish foreheads. Here's how you can make your own.

What you'll need...
  1. 1 washcloth
  2. 2 rubber bands
  3. googly eyes, puffs, ribbon
  4. glue gun
The steps...

1. Lay your washcloth out flat.

2. Roll up one side diagonally.

3. Roll up the other side diagonally.

4. Fold the rolled washcloth in half.

5. Tie the washcloth off using a rubberband. (I couldn't find any, so I grabbed one of Little Page's ponytail bands.) Leave enough room to fit an ice cube. Lay the washcloth flat so the loop is showing like so:

6. Fold the pointy end up and over to create a head and tie off with another band. This creates the ears. You want the two rubberbands to overlap.

7. Add a puff for a nose and one in the back for a tail. Glue on some googly eyes and then hide the bands with a cute ribbon. You're done! I'm going to attach this one to a baby shower gift for a friend.

Hope you and your family enjoy a germ free day! I'm off to take a much-needed nap.

  4. I just saw a link to your site from Regekah Bland on Twitter - and I LOVE it, my kids are just coming up to this age (2.5 and 3.5 now), and I have always loved the combination of books/crafts projects. This is really a great site, I can't wait to make some of these with my kids.
Any good book for sock puppets??

  5. cute! My daughter was given an "ouch mouse" when she was a baby and it's been our fav way to fix all the ouchies for years now. The concept is the same as your bunny, with the addition of a little plastic ice cube in the body of the animal. I'm so happy to find this tutorial so I can now make them for baby gifts.

  6. I remember making that as a child, though it was just for Easter decor, not a boo boo. Nice idea!!!
